Little Bear / Storm Castle Trail System
Little Bear Road is a rugged, 11-mile dirt and gravel backcountry route just outside Bozeman, offering varied terrain, wildlife views, and plenty of off-grid adventure. While not heavily trafficked, this trail rewards riders with a moderately challenging ride, including a climb of over 2,100 ft.
One of the most exciting features of this route is its connection to the Storm Castle trail system, giving you the option to turn a short trip into a full-day ride deep into the Gallatin National Forest. Whether you’re exploring by ATV or snowmobile, linking into Storm Castle opens up more remote terrain and expansive views — a true backcountry experience.
Expect a real sense of wilderness, and plan accordingly — it’s a trail where the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
Located on I-90 at Exit #241, just 15 miles east of Butte along the Continental Divide, Pipestone OHV Area, part of the Pipestone Special Recreation Management Area, contains 28,000 acres of the region’s best OHV riding opportunities. The most popular OHV riding area in Montana contains 75 miles of designated travel routes on BLM lands. An additional 600 miles of routes are located on adjacent U.S. Forest Service lands. BLM routes are open to a variety of vehicle types, including full-size, 50” wide or less, and motorcycles. Each route is well-marked with a trail number, difficulty rating (easiest to extremely difficult), allowed uses and vehicle types, and GPS coordinates. BLM and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered with the “Friends of Pipestone” group to develop a corresponding map of the area, which is also available from the Avenza PDF Maps App. Because of the area’s geographic location in the rain/snow shadow of the Continental Divide, it is often rideable year-round, with spring and fall being the best times to ride.

Snowmobile trail is 16 miles of marked and groomed trails. Suitable for inexperienced snowmobilers. Highway 191 to Buck Creek Ridge on a snow-covered road. Good sightseeing and snow play sites. Forest Service rental cabin on top of the Yellow Mule Divide.
